The Weather Page

I am not a weather expert but weather is something I always been fascinated in. As I learn more I will share that information here. I will also post any weather information that you might need here.

Tools of the Trade

Thermometer

Thermometer

Thermometer

  • Purpose: Measures air temperature. It measures temperature in Celsius ad Fahrenheit

  • Use in Forecasting: Temperature trends help predict fronts, frost, and heatwaves.

Barometer

Thermometer

Barometer

  • Purpose: Measures air pressure.

  • Use in Forecasting: Falling pressure usually signals stormy weather; rising pressure suggests clearing skies.

Anemometer

Anemometer

Anemometer

  • Purpose: Measures wind speed.

  • Use in Forecasting: Wind speed changes help track storm systems and pressure gradients.

Wind Vane

Anemometer

Wind Vane (Weather Vane)

  • Purpose: Shows wind direction.

  • Use in Forecasting: Wind shifts indicate approaching weather fronts or storms.

Rain Gauge

Weather Balloons

Rain Gauge

  • Purpose: Collects and measures rainfall.

  • Use in Forecasting: Confirms precipitation amounts for flood monitoring and model accuracy

Weather Balloons

Weather Balloons

Weather Balloon (Radiosonde)

  • Purpose: Carries instruments to measure temperature, pressure, and humidity at various altitudes.

  • Use in Forecasting: Provides vertical atmospheric profiles essential for storm prediction.

Weather Radar

Weather Radar

  • Purpose: Uses radio waves to detect precipitation and track its movement.

  • Use in Forecasting: Identifies storm intensity, location, and movement; Doppler radar can detect wind patterns inside storms.

Buoys

Buoy

  • Purpose: Floating station that measures ocean and atmospheric conditions.

  • Use in Forecasting: Monitors sea surface temperatures, which influence storms and climate patterns.

Weather Satellites

Weather Satellites

Weather Satellite

  • Purpose: Orbits Earth to capture images and measure atmospheric conditions from space.

  • Use in Forecasting: Tracks cloud cover, hurricanes, and temperature patterns over large areas.

Symbols on a Weather Map

What do these symbols mean

  • Cold Front – Boundary where cold air replaces warm air.

  • Warm Front – Boundary where warm air replaces cold air.

  • Stationary Front – Boundary between two air masses that isn’t moving.****

  • Occluded Front – When a cold front overtakes a warm front.

  • High Pressure (H) – Usually brings clear skies and calm weather.

  • Low Pressure (L) – Often brings clouds, wind, and precipitation.

  • Rain – Falling water droplets from clouds.

  • Snow – Frozen ice crystals falling from clouds.

  • Fog – Low cloud that reduces visibility near the ground.

  • Cloudy – Sky mostly covered by clouds.

  • Wind Barb – Shows wind speed and direction.

  • Isobars – Lines connecting areas of equal air pressure
